How Am I Going to Use This?

I’m a very practical person. Anytime I take a class, attend a conference, or go to a meeting, I ask myself, “How am I going to use this?” I’m always looking for ways to be a better leader at work, so taking the needed coursework in Educational Leadership for this Add-On program has so far been very helpful and has given me some ideas about how I’m going to use the covered material.

One of the takeaways from the first Law and Governance course was two questions that I ask myself when faced with a decision about one of our schools. “Can anyone be harmed by this situation?” and “Does this situation have a direct impact on and potential to interrupt the learning environment?” It seems like if those two questions can be answered clearly, then whatever the decision regarding the situation is will have a sound place to begin.

Summarizing Leaders Keys (LKES) in this current class was very helpful as I use that for evaluations and reviews. Supervisees and I use the Leader Assessment on Performance Standards (LAPS) to generate discussions about work performance and also to outline areas of professional development. I also use that to highlight my own need for professional development. We recently had our yearly performance reviews and I highlighted fiscal/budget professional development as a need based on LAPS Standard 4 Organizational Management. I also highlighted under LAPS Standard 5 Human Resources Management providing opportunities for professional growth and managing, supervising, and evaluating staff.

In addition to actually using LKES, I will certainly use the concepts, standards, and indicators from the Georgia Educational Leadership Standards (GELS). I already do. The review of each standard and hearing from other colleagues about how they interpret and use the standards has been very insightful and helpful. I will use the material learned in this class in conjunction with my day-to-day work and responsibilities so that it all works together to make me an effective and resourceful school leader.

Reflection

Camilla C. Moss Blog 4 I found out I was accepted into the Tier 1 add-on program on a Wednesday.   I registered for classes three days later and began classes two days after that.   The first day of class, I flew to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to attend a meeting and conference for work.   My first assignment was due the day I flew home and the evening of my daughter’s Spring Band concert.     I had no idea how I was going to manage the course work, my work and family.    This experience was so completely different from when I was last in school.   My time is already limited by my responsibilities and I was afraid that I couldn’t give my coursework the time and effort it required.   I learned quickly that the only way that I would be successful in this program was to focus on one thing at a time.   I had to learn to do the things that are important right now.   I couldn’t help but reflect on When I heard Greg McKeown discu...

Organization...not my strong suit!

Beth Maffei Organization is something I struggle with EVERY. SINGLE. DAY!  I start out every school year with the thought in mind that this will be the year that I am super organized.  Papers from meetings will be filed. Student papers will be assessed and commentary done in a timely manner.  When copies are made, hard copies will be immediately filed.  There won't be stacks of paper, books, folders, etc. just laying around. I have a plan and I start out strong.  But then reality sets in and by October the classroom looks like a war room! I know where everything is but it looks like a disaster!  And it drives me crazy. I also have plans for organizing my time in a more efficient manner. I have a paper calendar, an online school calendar and a google calendar.  I won't double book. I won't be late. I won't forget that something is due.  I start out strong and then it's October and I'm consistently checking calendars and/or double booking. ...
